Countdown to Moving Day
Six Weeks Before You Move
□ Make an inventory of everything to be moved.
□ Collect everything not to be moved for garage sale or charity.
□ Contact charity for date and time of pick-up.
□ Contact several moving companies for estimates.
□ Select mover, arrange for exact form of payment at destination.
□ Get cartons and packing materials to start packing now.
□ If you are being transferred by your employer: Check with employer to find out what moving expenses they
will cover.
Four Weeks Before You Move
□ Fill out Post Office change of address forms and give them to Postmaster.
□ Notify all magazines and billing companies of change of address.
□ Contact insurance agent to transfer or cancel coverage.
□ Dry clean clothes and pack in protective wrappers.
□ Collect everything you have loaned out and return everything you have borrowed.
□ Drain all gas and oil to prevent fire in moving van.
□ Check freezer and plan how you are going to use your food for the next two to three weeks.
□ Remove all jewelry and other valuables to a safe deposit box or other safe place to prevent loss during
move.
□ If moving out of state: Get children school records, get medical records and prescriptions from doctors
and dentists.
□ Get pet records and immunizations from veterinarians.
□ Give away or arrange for transportation of houseplants.
One Week Before You Move
□ Contact utility companies to set turn-off dates (on close of escrow date).
□ Arrange for cashiers check or money order to pay moving company upon arrival.
□ Check and make inventory of all furniture for dents and scratches.
□ Notify moving company of your inventory and compare on final day.
□ Pack a separate carton of moving tools and cleaning supplies.
□ Mark all boxes that you pack with the room they will be going into at your new home.
□ Organize at least one room in the house for packers and movers to move freely.
□ Cancel all newspapers, garden service, pool service, etc.
□ Review the entire list to make certain you haven’t overlooked anything.
□ If moving out of state: Transfer or close checking and savings accounts, have automobile serviced if
driving long distance, dispose of all combustibles and spray cans (they can explode – don’t pack them),
□ Check and double-check everything you have done before it is too late.
ON MOVING DAY: Plan to spend the entire day at the house.
Last minute decisions must be made by you.
□ Hire a baby sitter or send the children to a friend’s house for the day.
□ Stay with the moving van driver to oversee inventory.
□ Tell packers and/or the driver about fragile items.
□ Make a final check of the entire house, basement, closets, shelves, attic, garage and all other rooms.
□ Approve and sign moving forms.
□ Double check with the driver to make certain that moving company records show the correct property
delivery address of your new residence.
Don’t leave until after the movers leave.
